What is a Sukumizu?
The term Sukumizu refers either to a Japanese school swimsuit or to a swimsuit whose design is inspired by this traditional form of swimwear. Sukumizu is the commonly used abbreviation of スクール水着 – pronounced “sukūru mizugi” – which can be translated as “school swimsuit”.
Classic Sukumizus were originally developed for swimming lessons at Japanese schools. Their designs were therefore primarily functional, sporty and comparatively simple. The best-known versions are one-piece swimsuits, usually in dark blue, with wide shoulder straps, a moderate leg cut and a fully or largely covered bottom.
Today, the term Sukumizu is also used for modern swimsuits that incorporate this characteristic style. Some designs remain very close to the classic School Mizugi, while others adopt only certain elements and combine them with new materials, colours and cuts.
Classic Features of a Sukumizu
Although Sukumizus have existed in different generations and cuts, classic designs share several characteristic features that distinguish them from ordinary sports or leisure swimsuits.
Simple and Functional Design
Traditional School Mizugi were primarily created for swimming lessons at school. Their designs are therefore usually functional, sporty and free from elaborate decorative details.
Dark Blue Colour
A very dark shade of blue is regarded as the classic Sukumizu colour and may appear almost black depending on the fabric and lighting. Modern interpretations are now also available in black, white, vibrant colours and multicoloured designs.
Sporty One-Piece Cut
The best-known version is a close-fitting one-piece swimsuit. Wider shoulder straps and a secure fit provide support during movement and sporting activities.
Moderate Leg Cut and Covered Bottom
Classic Sukumizus do not normally feature an extremely high leg cut. Their shape is generally sporty and covering, with the bottom fully or at least largely covered.
Characteristic Seam Lines
Many traditional designs can be recognised by their distinctive construction. Depending on the type of Sukumizu, visible seams, fabric panels or overlapping sections may appear around the hips and abdomen.
On some older versions, an overlapping front panel created the characteristic appearance of a short skirt, while later designs more closely resembled a modern one-piece swimsuit. These construction details are frequently adopted and reinterpreted by contemporary designers.
Name Label
Another well-known feature is a white name label, which was often attached around the chest area. It could be used to write the name of the student wearing the swimsuit. On modern fashion and cosplay designs, this detail is sometimes retained as a decorative element.
Not every modern swimsuit in the Sukumizu style includes all of these characteristics. A combination of a sporty cut, dark blue colour and typical seam construction is often enough to create a clear visual connection to the classic School Mizugi design.
From the Classic School Mizugi to Modern Sukumizu Design
The classic School Mizugi was originally developed as functional swimwear for school swimming lessons. Over time, however, its characteristic shape evolved into a distinctive design style that is now also used outside its original school context.

Today, Japanese brands reinterpret the Sukumizu style with glossy wetlook fabrics, contrasting panels, zippers, higher leg cuts or striking colour combinations. The result is a range of swimsuits that still reveal their classic origins while appearing considerably more modern and fashion-oriented.
